Honor Unveiled Magic V: First Foldable Smartphone of Honor

Honor, a former Huawei sub-brand, has officially revealed the Honor Magic V, its first foldable smartphone.

It has a folding design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold smartphones, with a big internal folding display and a smaller exterior display that can be accessed when the phone is folded.

The foldable’s Chinese launch is today, with a starting price of ¥9,999 (about $1,569) for the 256GB storage variant. On January 18th, it will be offered for sale.

Honor Magic V Specifications

The internal folding screen of the Magic V measures 7.9 inches from corner to corner, with a resolution of 2272 x 1984, a refresh rate of 90Hz, and a 10:9 aspect ratio.

That’s somewhat more than Samsung’s Z Fold 3, which has a 7.6-inch internal screen with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels. The internal screen of the Magic V, as per Honor, is equivalent to using two 21:9 displays side by side.

The exterior screen of the Magic V is also somewhat larger than that of the Z Fold 3 at 6.45 inches compared to 6.2 for Samsung, with a resolution of 2560 x 1080, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a 21:9 aspect ratio.

When you don’t want to unfold the phone, Honor claims that this will help make it more usable.

Honor Unveiled Magic V Foldable

The Magic V is 72.7mm broad, 14.3mm thick, and 160.4mm height when folded, and it extends to 141.1mm wide and 6.7mm thick when unfolded.
When folded, it’s somewhat broader than Samsung’s latest Z Fold, but it’s also significantly thinner.

However, Honor’s foldable is somewhat heavier. It comes in three colors: orange, silver, and black, and according to Honor CEO George Zhao, it can be folded and unfolded 200,000 times.

The Magic V is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU and comes with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. It has a 4,750mAh battery that can be charged at up to 66W, providing a 50% charge in 15 minutes.

It supports 5G and runs Honor’s Magic UI 6.0 OS on top of Android 12, which allows several app windows to be displayed at the same time, according to Honor.

On the back of the foldable, Honor has added a trio of 50 MP sensors, including a primary sensor, an ultrawide camera, and a “spectrum enhanced camera,” according to Honor.

One 42 MP selfie camera is integrated into the outside display, while the other is embedded in the inner foldable screen.

The Honor joins a growing number of firms that have either announced or begun selling foldable smartphones. Oppo’s Find N was announced late last year, and Xiaomi and Honor’s previous parent company Huawei both offer foldable devices.

Honor’s Magic V global release date is yet to be revealed.
