Lenovo patent smartphones with super curved display

Lenovo patents 10 smartphone variants with a super curved display. Some models with under-screen camera and periscopic zoom camera.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Lenovo regularly brings new mobile phones to the market. For example, the company released a gaming smartphone last week; the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2. The company focuses mainly on the market of budget and mid-range telephones.

Still, some models are particularly innovative, Lenovo already showed a wrap-around smartphone in 2016 that you can put on your wrist. Lenovo does not only release smartphones under its own brand, but also under the Motorola brand label .

A new patent from Lenovo Beijing Co. Ltd. shows that the company is considering developing a mobile phone where the screen extends to both sides of the device.

It concerns a design patent that was applied for on September 27, 2020 at the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The documentation was released today, April 13, 2021, and includes no fewer than 75 images, showing 10 design variants.

All of Lenovo’s proprietary phone models have a so-called super curved display. In other words, both sides of the device consist of a screen surface. The curvature continues even further as with a waterfall display. Only at the rear there is no display available. As a result, there is no room for physical buttons on the sides of the device.

The models differ in terms of camera system, this applies to both the selfie camera and the camera system at the rear. The first model has the simplest design. This device has a punch-hole camera and a triple camera on the back – with a similar camera design to the Lenovo K12, which was released in China at the end of last year.

With the second model, no front camera is visible, this device has an under-screen selfie camera. The rear camera system is the same as the first model. Then the same model was also captured with a double punch-hole camera, which is placed in the top left corner.

The other models all have a quad camera, which is placed in the top left corner. The layout of the camera system differs per model, some models also include a periscopic zoom camera. The image above gives a good insight into the different design variants.

Since it is a design patent, certain matters, such as the specifications and functions, remain underexposed. Lenovo probably also wants to add touch functionality to the sides, so that the physical buttons can be replaced by touch buttons.

There is a clear trend among Chinese telephone manufacturers to adopt curved displays. While competitor Samsung is increasingly using a flat screen, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Note 20 , Chinese manufacturers often opt for rounded displays. From a slight curve to quad-curved displays that are rounded on all four sides. In that respect, it is not inconceivable that Lenovo smartphones with a super curved display will also be released in the future.
