Things have been quiet lately about the Surface Neo, Microsoft’s first large-format dual-screen device. Now a video has emerged which allegedly shows a Surface Neo in “teardown” – it is claimed that Microsoft has discontinued the device.

First of all: Both claims are not verifiable – neither that the device shown is a real Surface Neo, nor that Microsoft is not developing the Neo any further.

The short video from Hikari Calyx Tech is still very interesting because, after months of downtime, it shows another outlook on the exciting hybrid device.

In the video, you basically see the surface of the Surface Neo including the computer unit, but without the displays. You can easily see the folding mechanism that Microsoft also used on the Surface Duo.

Video supposedly shows a prototype

The video thus presents a device that is not yet functional and on which “Prototype – Not for Sale” has been printed on the individual hardware components. In the video, not a word is lost about what is shown and there is little further information.

Microsoft published an overview video, official teasers including an announcement website, and a comparison with the Surface Duo of the Surface Neo early on, but then removed the information about the Neo from the website without further explanation last year.

The Surface Neo was unveiled in October 2019 at an event where the company announced its plan to focus more on dual-screen products.

Unlike the Surface Duo, which runs with Android, the development of the Surface Neo depends on the development of the new Windows 10X operating system.

Cancellation or postponement?

Instead of really stepping on the gas with the Surface Neo and bringing the device to market, Microsoft has instead announced that Windows 10X is now being optimized for single-screen PCs.

Many understood this announcement as a rejection for the Neo. Windows 10X is not expected to appear until 2022, so there is justified hope that Neo will hit the market at the same time.
