Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek performed well last year and doesn’t seem set to lower the bar this year.
What is known?
According to two independent sources, MediaTek is working on a mobile SoC, which will be the first in the world to be built on a 4-nanometer process technology. The new product is planned to be shown in late 2021 or early 2022. According to rumors, many smartphone manufacturers, including OPPO, Xiaomi, Samsung and Vivo, have already lined up for it.
Rumor has it that the processor will be able to compete with the 800-series Snapdragon and will be very energy-efficient, but not cheap. If the current 5-nanometer chips TSMC produces for MediaTek for $30 – $35, the new processor will cost the company $80 apiece.
