Smartphones Nokia 7 Plus Breached users data in China

Once the world’s dominant cellphone maker Nokia, but which struggled to keep up with the shift to smartphones, sold all its handset activities and is now focused on telecom network equipment.

Initially, the handset business was sold to Microsoft in 2014. HMD, set up by former Nokia executives, took over the Nokia feature phone business from Microsoft in 2016 and struck a deal with Nokia Oyj to use the brand on smartphones.

In  Finland, an investigation began into the company HMD Global, which manufactures smartphones under the brand Nokia. The reason for the investigation was the complaints of Nokia 7 Plus owners that the gadgets transmit information about them to China.

What happened

The NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) reported on Thursday a data breach related to the Nokia 7 Plus model, built by HMD, which received a “tip” from a regular user, Henrik Ostad. He noticed that his Nokia 7 Plus regularly contacts an unknown server. The smartphone sent GPS coordinates, network information, device serial number and SIM card number of its owner to this server, and in unencrypted form.

As it turned out, the information was sent to the server in the vnet.cn domain, which is supposedly owned by the Chinese state-owned company China Telecom. It is likely that this application is designed for the Chinese market, but it was accidentally extended to  Nokia Phones 7 Plus for outside of China”,  noted in the NRK.

Already fixed

The HMD Global confirmed that smartphones really transmit data. The company explained that this is  software failure in a  batch of one of the device models”. In this case, no personal information to third parties did not get.

In the last month, this error corrected, almost all affected devices reinstall the software.

Despite this, the data protection ombudsman of Finland, Reijo Aarnio, promised that the agency would investigate a possible violation of the data security rules and examine the incident from the legal side.
