On November 30, 2020, the Beijing-based company Xiaomi Mobile Software filed a patent with the National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA) for the design of a smartphone with a retractable rotating camera module. Recently, the agency published documentation with images of the device.
What did they come up with?
At first glance, this is an ordinary smartphone without any cutouts and holes for the front camera. Its special feature is the use of a retractable unit with a rotary camera, which can play the role of both the main and front-facing.
Probably, the idea is borrowed from the Samsung Galaxy A80 (pictured) with a similar design. Unfortunately, this is the only Samsung device with a rotary camera-apparently, the production was too expensive, so the company returned to a more familiar design.
The images show a camera with three sensors, you can also see a SIM card compartment, a USB-C port, a speaker, and various buttons.
Of course, this is still only a patent, and it is unclear whether Xiaomi will implement this idea.
