According to information from China, Xiaomi may be the next company to release a phone with an electrochromic back panel, following the debut of the OPPO Reno6 Pro+ Detective Conan Edition.
Xiaomi isn’t one to miss out on a trend, so the revelation that it’s working on a phone with an electrochromic back shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Xiaomi is testing a smartphone with a low-power photochromic/electrochromic back panel, according to a rough translation of a Weibo post posted earlier today, according to the Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station.
It’ll be interesting to see which of the two technologies Xiaomi chooses. Under direct sunlight, the Vivo S10’s photochromic back turns from orange to blue. The process of color change is caused by UV rays from the sun.
The OPPO Reno6 Pro+ Detective Conan Edition, on the other hand, has an electrochromic back that can change from silver to red and back. When electricity is transmitted through the glass, the color changes.
We don’t know whether Xiaomi intends to release this phone with a photochromic/electrochromic back panel or whether it will remain a concept device. It might alternatively be made of plastic rather than glass, such as polycarbonate.
